I agree with my wife that nothing is more relaxing than fluke fishing trips . If you have a good drift, good friends, some warm summer sun, and a good bite going, nothing beats it. It's not rocket science-we've had the "dead stick" outfish us before. That is to say, everyone fishes and we put one more rod in a holder. If it bends in half, someone reels it in. Well, no surprise that that rod does better sometimes (often) than the person actively fishing. Serious, I don't know why.
What I like about fluke fishing is that you never know what you'll catch next. We've had fluke, sea bass, bluefish, stripers, sea robins, dogfish, and several other fish coming over the rails at any time during the day. That's pretty cool. Fluke fishing is much like that for sea bass as it doesn't involve a long boat ride or special skills needed. Also, we're always close to shore, which means that we can tuck the boat in the lee of land most times if the wind kicks up. It makes the fishing much more enjoyable.
In Massachusetts, fluke fishing usually means Cape Cod. Warm water, shallow water, great fishing. We also have a fluke fishery around Provincetown. It's quietly growing and can be combined with great Striped Bass and Bluefish fishing. In Buzzards Bay, our fishery is only 15 minutes from the marina! Not bad. A bit furher, off of Martha's Vineyard, the fluke fishing is nothing short of incredible!
