There aren't many whiting left around; just ask everyone who fishes and is over 50 from NY and NJ. They used to have a winter run of those fish that was epic. We still catch them in deep, muddy water, but, since we don't catch much else there, why bother? They aren't big, but are truly delicious. A 2-pound fish is a nice fish--they look like large smelt. From what everyone says, they make the best tuna bait ever. I'll try fishing for them in 2007 before a tuna trip to see if we can find them and if they really work (and if I can keep them away from the dogfish.)
